As a healthcare traveler, you get the chance to explore new cities, gain significant job experience at various facilities, and make a difference in the lives of many. And yet, the logistics of packing for a 13-week travel assignment can have its challenges.

In this blog, we’ll share how to overcome the challenges of packing for a travel healthcare assignment and ensure you're well-prepared for your journey.

Limited Luggage Space

Space is frequently a top concern when packing for a travel healthcare assignment. “How will I fit everything I need in my suitcase?” We hear you. It’s tough to fit 13 weeks (or more) of your belongings inside a few, relatively small suitcases. It can be difficult to find a balance between the need to pack necessary items and keeping the load manageable.

Tip: Prioritize and stay organized before you start packing. Make a thorough packing list.

Packing Electronics.

Electronics are a must-have on your travel assignment and everywhere, these days. However, keep in mind there is always a risk for these expensive tools to be damaged when traveling long distances so they must be packed securely and with care. To do this, stuff any empty places in your box or suitcase with bubble wrap or loose tee shirts/clothing to create a cushion-like layer of protection. Make sure the items are firmly secured to limit movement when traveling.

Tip: Prior to moving, check that your living location has Wi-Fi and if not, look into additional or supplemental data plans with your cellular provider so you can take advantage of your mobile device’s hot.

Work, Play, and Lounge Attire

Packing separate wardrobes for your work life and your personal life requires more items to pack and less space in your suitcase. To ensure you have just enough clothes for your shifts without overpacking, it's important to consider the dress code policy of the healthcare facility you'll be working. Most facilities may have specific uniform color requirements, so double-check that you have the appropriate colored scrubs and uniform before you set out on your adventure. You can also eliminate clutter by removing items that might not be allowed at the facility.

Tip: Roll your clothes when you pack! It saves on space allowing more room for the accessories you need to go out and explore the city. Also, simplify your wardrobe, consider purchasing only a few sets of scrubs that can be easily washed and take up little space. Packing the Essential Medical Supplies & Equipment.

Some healthcare positions may need to bring their own medical supplies and equipment. Depending on the profession, you may be required to bring specialized tools, stethoscopes, or personal protection equipment (PPE). It is critical to ensure that you have all the required items while staying under the airline’s baggage size and weight constraints if flying

Tip: Check with the healthcare facility ahead of time to see what they provide and what you'll need to bring. Consider purchasing travel-sized versions of common medical supplies and equipment to save space and weight.

Establishing a Home Away from Home.

Living away from home for an extended period can also be challenging. While packing light is recommended, bringing a few of your favorite decor or belongings can provide comfort and make your living arrangements feel more like home. Bring items that are meaningful to you and portable, such as a favorite pillow, a nice blanket, framed photos of your loved ones, or a small piece of artwork that reminds you of home.

Tip: Making your living space feel like a true home can assist you in creating a comfortable place where you can relax and recover after a long day at work.
